Layout... [Update]
It’s actually a shame. This site is up for a few months now and I still haven’t developped a design for it. An this while I have no job and thus plenty of time. At least enough time to do websites like the Audiograph:“http://www.audiograph-dresden.de” and On the edge. Whilst the first was the key to my final comprehension of Textpattern, the latter was done in one night.
Such a shame, Mkorsakov pointed out that a photo breaks my layout, and all i have left to reply is that I don’t have a layout. (To avoid philosophical debates, of course this site has a layout but it’s the standard texpattern layout, so, to me it’s no layout)
I promise I will do something about it…
[Update]
As you can see, something has happened. Elements have changed place and colours have appeared. This is evolution and we are all taking part.
Apparently the design is still broken in the IE, but right now I can’t be bothered to fix it. Besides I can’t say anything about IE7, I haven’t booted Windows for quite a while now. I could just verify that it is broken on IE 6.0.
I’m thinking of ways to fix it, but hey I can’t really be bothered. It’s probably gonna be a fixed by conditional comments and an alternate stylesheet for Internet Explorer which only hands out the basic layout.

I have been linked...
That is seriously weird. Vlad (I know him personally) has been kind enough to link my site, although nothing is on here [yet] First of, thank you Vlad. I should take it as a hint to do something about this site.
Now you might wonder, what have I been up to during the last weeks… months? (It’s been so long, I forgot password and log in name for this blog) Seriously, not much. I now have the results of the IB, and yes, I passed. 32 points are fine, but hey it could/should have been more. But now I am trying to find out what to do next. Unfortunately, reading tea leafs is not very effective. But my research hasn’t been either. I am stuck, basically having three main directions in my mind:
- Media Design, Media and Print design, Media technology or similar
- History, Sociology, Politics or combinations of these
- Biochemistry, Biotechnology
Looks very straight forward… I should go for… here it comes: One of these! (surprise) But I have no idea which one.
This is just the question for what to study. It doesn’t take care of the when and where yet. There are also hundreds of other options I could do… like gain some work experience, work and earn money etc. I intend a few months travel & work in Europe, too. It is just, euhm… too much?
So, instead of putting some energy into the advancement of humanity, I have put some energy into my linux emigration. Actually, before I left Cambridge, it went quite well. But now I am home again, stuck in the country of 56k. Yes, I live in one of those “remote” areas, that have been fortunate enough to get fibre optic cable in the early 90s. However, apparently the German telecom (the pink one!) was not able or willing to enable broadband or adsl down here because of this. I guess because they’re too stupid to implement the proper technology.
To make things worse, there is no flat rate for dial-up connections. Therefore I pay per minute which makes things really awful. Especially if you chose a cheap provider and these bastards change their plan by increasing the price by about 50 times and you don’t notice in time!
But back to Linux… I am running Ubuntu Dapper now. I decided to give it a try because I was fed up with SuSE’s updating-mechanism and various other things. And i have to say, I am impressed. Not everything works well… I had a few ugly deaths of the XServer, usually after updating the Compiz-libs (hey, it’s not even beta, so what?), but apart from that… it looks great, works fine…. except for the modem. It’s a smartlink one – i think. And configuration is hell. Seriously, it’s no fun at all. I haven’t been able to figure out how to get it to work [yet].
Then again, I have this dodgy PCMCIA sound card, a Creative Audigy 2ZS notebook. Using it in Windows requires a driver-installation tour(ture). Something about 2 reboots, plenty of different unwanted software, registration etc… I thought it wouldn’t work in linux anyway, and put it away for a while… But then I thought, why not give it a try? So I did… plugged in the card, expecting nothing to happen, rather being forced to read man pages and browse the web for some useful manual or a simple statement like “doesn’t work anyway. Save your time doing useful things”. But instead Ubuntu told me it found a new audio device, whether I would like to use it? I would just need to activate it… and a few minutes later, it worked. I didn’t test all the in-/outputs yet, but I am surprised it worked at all… and so simple.
Talking of audio: I am starting to love AmaroK. Initially I thought the Interface was a bit dodgy, but I am getting used to it… step by step. Also I love the packet manager. dbpkg + aptitude is just great, don’t you agree? If you prefer an rpm based or a graphical interface, nevermind… my point is, it is so much simpler than windows. No more looking on obscure websites if you’re just looking for a small and simple program.
As I pointed out earlier, I managed to get Compiz + XGL to work. It isn’t really something for a productive environment, I know. (am I productive or what?!) But then… I prefer that the windows are drawn much smother etc. Besides the effects make some of the windows-only folks jealous… He he.
Now, as life is a circle and we cannot escape, back to the beginning: Yes, one day I’m going to develop a nice design for this page. I’m going to put some time into it, I promise. And Vlad, I am gonna link back, properly. In my own personal blog roll. But not now, I am too tired right now.
Good night.
